The Story of the Shepherd Boy

Deep within the enchanting rolling meadows, resided a boy named Shepherd. His existence was essentially unadulterated, and unsophisticated. His only responsibility was to look after his flock of ewes.

Their gentle baas and the murmuring of the gales across the lone tree on the peak were his constant companions. Day in day, watching over his charges imbued in him a sense of quiet fulfillment.

However, there were at times moments of isolation, when the shepherd boy would pine for companionship. In one such instance out of sheer boredom, the shepherd boy conceived a troublesome plot.

Narratives of wolves prowling on sheep had long been circulating in the village. So, the boy opted to exploit this fear and played a joke on the townsfolk.

One morning he dashed into the village yelling “Wolf! There is a wolf attacking my sheep!” The scared villagers rushed up the hills to help but saw no beast.

The boy giggled at the puzzle on their faces. This prank persisted for a few days more. But, one morning, a real wolf did charge at the flock. The shepherd boy raced for help, shouting “Wolf, Wolf!” But this time, no one came.

Frustrated and alone, the boy battled against the wolf but could protect only few of his flock. Heartbroken, he returned to the village only to receive a lesson on honesty and the repercussions of crying wolf.

The story of this shepherd boy has been handed down generations as a mediaeval parable for teaching the importance of honesty, the implications of dishonesty and the risks of crying wolf. Moreover, it emphasizes how trust once broken, is tough to reclaim. It's website a story as appropriate today as it was then.
